The Scorpio birthstone is not one stone. It is a small group, and which one applies depends on the exact day you were born. Scorpio runs from about October 23 to November 22, so the sign straddles two months and two sets of birthstones. Topaz and citrine are the usual November stones. Opal and tourmaline are the usual October stones. This guide sorts out which list applies to you, what each stone is really like, and how to care for it.
It’s worth saying plainly, same as with any topic here: none of this is scientifically validated. No controlled study has found that a gemstone changes a person’s health, luck, or personality. What follows describes documented history, the official birthstone lists, and the real properties of the stones.
Why Does the Scorpio Birthstone Have More Than One Answer?
There are two separate systems, and they get mixed together. One matches stones to zodiac signs. The other matches stones to calendar months. A Scorpio birthday falls across two calendar months, so the month system gives two answers.
Wikipedia’s birthstone entry traces the idea back to the first-century historian Josephus. He linked the twelve stones in Aaron’s breastplate to the twelve months and the twelve signs of the zodiac. The entry adds that modern lists “have little to do” with the breastplate. Tastes, customs, and confusing translations have pulled them away from their origins, and the custom of wearing a single birthstone is only a few centuries old.
So when a guide declares one stone “the” Scorpio birthstone, it is choosing a list. That is why this article shows each list and lets you pick.
Which Scorpio Birthstone List Applies to You?
If you were born between October 23 and October 31, your month is October. If you were born from November 1 to about November 22, your month is November. The table below summarizes the current US and UK lists.
| Birth month | United States (current) | United Kingdom |
|---|---|---|
| October (Oct 23 to 31) | Opal, tourmaline | Opal |
| November (Nov 1 to 22) | Topaz, citrine | Topaz (citrine appears on some UK lists) |
The US column matches Wikipedia’s birthstone entry and GIA’s guides. The UK column is less certain. Wikipedia’s 2013 UK list gives topaz and citrine for November, while another jeweler’s summary of the same list gives topaz alone. Both agree on opal for October. UK jeweler Winterson says it draws on the British list from 1937 with some later American additions, which shows how much the lists blend in practice.
The history is better documented. According to Wikipedia and the International Gem Society, the US jewelry industry adopted an official list at a 1912 meeting and updated it in 1952, adding citrine for November and pink tourmaline for October. Winterson reports that Britain’s National Association of Goldsmiths created its own list in 1937, drawing largely on the 1912 American version.
Topaz: The Classic November Stone
GIA’s November birthstone guide lists topaz and citrine as the two November birthstones. Topaz comes in a wide range of colors, including colorless, blue, yellow, orange, pink, violet, and brown. GIA notes that most blue topaz seen today is the permanent result of treating colorless topaz with irradiation and heating.
The name may come from the Sanskrit word tapas, meaning “fire,” or from the Greek topazos. According to GIA, the ancient Greeks believed topaz gave them strength. From the 1300s to the 1600s, Europeans thought it could thwart magic spells and dispel anger. The pinkish-orange Imperial topaz is the most prized variety, and GIA gives two stories for the name, one tracing it to Russian royalty and one to a gift to Brazil’s Emperor Pedro II in 1881.
On durability, GIA rates topaz at 8 on the Mohs scale but says its toughness is poor, so it can chip or crack. Steam cleaners and ultrasonic cleaners should be avoided. Warm, soapy water works best, and sudden temperature changes can cause internal breaks.
Citrine: The Affordable Alternative
Citrine is the yellow to brownish-orange variety of quartz. GIA says it has shared a history of mistaken identities with topaz, so people long assumed it had the same powers, such as soothing tempers and calming the wearer. The name is believed to come from the French word for lemon, citron.
Most citrine on the market today is not natural. GIA says most of it results from heat-treating amethyst, and that Bolivia’s Anahí mine is an important source of natural, unheated citrine. At 7 on the Mohs scale with good toughness, citrine is usually durable enough for everyday wear. GIA says it is safe to clean with warm, soapy water, and usually fine in an ultrasonic machine. Steam cleaning is risky because high heat could crack it.
Opal and Tourmaline: For Scorpios Born in October
If your birthday is in the last week of October, the official stones are opal and tourmaline. Our full October Birthstone guide covers both in depth. The short version is that opal is the traditional choice, prized for its play of color but more fragile, while tourmaline is the harder stone and comes in a vast range of colors.
Comparing the Four Stones
| Stone | Month | Mohs hardness | Care note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Topaz | November | 8 | Poor toughness. Warm soapy water. No steam or ultrasonic cleaners |
| Citrine | November | 7 | Good toughness. Warm soapy water. Avoid steam |
| Opal | October | 5 to 6.5 | Can fracture with high heat or sudden temperature change |
| Tourmaline | October | 7 to 7.5 | Heat can damage it. Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners |
Hardness and care details come from GIA’s October and November birthstone guides. For a deeper look at topaz and citrine as a pair, see our November Birthstone article.
Is There Any Science Behind Zodiac Birthstones?
No. Wikipedia’s overview of astrology and science states that astrology “has not demonstrated its effectiveness in controlled studies and has no scientific validity.” It adds that no proposed mechanism explains how planetary positions could affect people without contradicting basic biology and physics.
Birthstone lists add another layer of weakness. They were standardized by industry groups, revised more than once, and differ between the US and UK, with sources disagreeing on some details. A stone’s gemological properties, such as its hardness, are real and testable. The idea that it suits a particular sign is a tradition.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Scorpio birthstone?
It depends on your birth date. For November birthdays, topaz is on every list, and citrine is on the US list and some UK lists. For late October birthdays, the US lists opal and tourmaline, and the UK lists opal.
Is topaz or citrine better for Scorpio?
Neither is better in any measurable way. Topaz is harder but less tough, and citrine is more affordable and more durable day to day. Choose by color, budget, and how you plan to wear it.
What if I was born in October?
Then your month stones are opal and tourmaline, not topaz and citrine. Scorpio is a zodiac sign, not a month, so a Scorpio can have either set. You are free to wear any stone you like.
Do Scorpio birthstones have healing powers?
No evidence supports that. Wikipedia’s page on crystal healing says there is no peer-reviewed scientific evidence that crystal healing has any effect. If wearing a stone helps you feel calm or focused, that effect comes from the ritual and the meaning you give it.
Isn’t it a little convenient that the lists keep changing?
Fairly, yes, and it’s worth naming directly. Birthstone lists were updated by jewelry associations, with citrine for November added in 1952 and the UK keeping its own version. The gemology of each stone is stable. The assignment of a stone to a month or sign is a convention that people revised.
The Honest Answer
There is no single Scorpio birthstone. There are four common candidates, and your birth date decides which list you fall under. Topaz and citrine are the usual November pair, and opal and tourmaline are the usual October pair. All four are legitimately beautiful, and each has real properties you can look up. Pick the one you like, take care of it according to its hardness, and treat the meaning as tradition.
